The government is preparing to start selling beef in India.
The Food and Drug Administration has decided to open a new distribution centre in Uttar Pradesh, where cows are being slaughtered for their milk.
India’s cattle feedlot industry is worth about $6 billion.
The new centre will be a large facility with capacity of over 5,000 tonnes.
It will be open from December 2 and will be able to ship beef to consumers in India, where beef is a popular staple.
The centre, at a cost of $3 billion, is expected to be completed in 2022.
It will house 10,000 employees.
India has one of the largest beef markets in the world.
The country produces about a fifth of the world’s beef and is the biggest exporter.
